Welcome to Palesviaki
Make sure you don't miss it. More information coming soon.
Melbourne Mytilenians waited in anticipation for the 27the November, the day they were able to get hold of the book which included photographs and oral histories of themselves and their families back then, when families were torn apart, the good byes and their plight as immigrants.
Vasilios Vasilas, a secondary school teacher from Sydney and parents from Mesotopos in Lesvos, meticulously interviewed hundreds of Mytilenians from Melbourne and Sydney, producing his second book, 'Our Homeland, Lesvos', a tribute to the migrants of Lesvos.
Over 100 Mytilenians attended the 'Vasilis Vasilas book presentation' at Palesviaki on Sunday 27th November hosted by Pan-Lesvian Federation and Palesviaki Enosis Victoria. The MC was Kostas Tsoumbakos, with chief presenter of the book being Sotiris Hatzimanolis, Editor of Neos Kosmos. Various speakers shared their experiences with Vasili throughout the information gathering time as well as expressing their admiration on such a proactive and intimate project, aiming to preserve our history in a way we can proudly pass onto our children and their children.
Palesviaki president Mr George Stavrinos also welcomed interstate visitors, from Sydney the president of the Mytilenian Brotherhood Mr Stavros Kritikos and committee member
Mr Lefterios Samios.
Mr Vasilis Vasilas spoke of his passion for this second project, and of the love and warmth of his compatriots his interviewees throughout the process. Vasili, shared his experience
with the audience, even though this is his second book, he is still at times overwhelmed by the experience, noting that by the time the book was published three participants of the book
had already passed away. This is a true llegacy for our people from Lesvos and we thank Vasili for his efforts and the wonderful project he has accomplished. All the best Vasili.
